The lead client is a veteran electrical engineer with over twenty years of experience on the job. As soon as he walked in, he said something that the translator rendered as: "A lot of the equipment back home is still from the Soviet era. It's time for an upgrade. We came to China to find a transformer manufacturer we can work with for the long haul."
The tour started on the production floor. Unlike some of our previous visitors, these Kazakh clients paid exceptionally close attention to the tank structure and sealing design of the oil-immersed transformers. They lingered in front of the S20 series units for quite a while, asking detailed questions about weld inspection procedures and leak testing standards. It turned out that many substations back in their region are located near the Gobi Desert—blistering heat during the day, biting cold at night, and plenty of sand and dust. For an electric power transformer, the sealing integrity and thermal stability are anything but theoretical concerns.
One of Huayu's technical staff crouched down and walked them through the weld points one by one, explaining the non-destructive testing process and the acceptance criteria for pressure tests. The clients nodded along and pulled out their phones to snap a few close-ups of the weld seams.
Then came the interesting moment, over in the dry-type transformer section.
One of the clients stopped in front of an SCB18 dry-type transformer—and stayed there for a solid twenty minutes. He ran his hand over the surface of the cast coil, leaned in to examine the color and bubble-free finish of the epoxy resin, then walked around to study the nameplate on the back. Finally, he straightened up, exchanged a few words in Kazakh with a colleague, and said through the translator: "The workmanship on this transformer is better than what I saw at a factory in Turkey."
That comment made its way around the shop floor. Nobody said much, but you could feel a quiet sense of pride settle in.
The business meeting in the conference room ended up being shorter than the shop floor discussion. The clients were straightforward: they had seen the products, they had seen the workmanship, they had seen how the place was run. Once back in Kazakhstan, they would compile a detailed technical requirements document and send it over. The initial interest: two 110kV oil-immersed power transformers and four 10kV dry-type transformers, destined for an industrial park renovation project on the outskirts of Almaty.
Before departing, the group posed for a photo with the Huayu team at the factory entrance. As he climbed into the car, the lead client shook hands with the head of the technical department and said, "In winter, it drops to minus thirty degrees where we are. If your transformers can handle that, we'll be doing business together for a long time."
The technical lead smiled and replied, "They can handle it. We've shipped plenty of units to Northeast China—same kind of winter."
